Flight School Graduates

During WWII, over 25,000 young women applied for the honor of flying for their country as part of a program called  Women Airforce Service Pilots — WASP for short. These civilian volunteers ferried and tested planes so male pilots could head to combat duty ...

Of these, 1,830 were chosen to receive training and 1,074 graduated. Of those only 38 died while in service. 786 who were accepted into the program didn't reach graduation for differing reasons: About 30% didn't pass training requirements; 8% resigned; about 1.5% didn't make it because of medical reasons and about 0.8% were released for disciplinary reasons. In all, only 38 died while in training or while on duty.

These counts don't include the 28 WAFS organized by Nancy Love. The WAFS program was officially announced on 10 Sep 1942. The first 11 WAFS were sworn in on the 21st (the same day the B-29 made its first successful flight). By mid-December, "The Originals" were all on station.

In the meantime, Jacqueline Cochran, the first woman to fly a bomber across the Atlantic on 17 Jun 1941, got approval to start the Womens Flight Training Detachment (WATD) on 15 Sep 1942. The first class began on 15 Nov 1942 and the last class graduated on 7 Dec 1944.

On 21 Aug 1943 the WAFS and WFTDs merged to form the WASP.

"This is not a time when women should be patient. We are in a war and we need to fight it with all our ability and every weapon possible. Women pilots, in this particular case, are a weapon waiting to be used." ~Eleanor Roosevelt (1942)

My mother, Carol Brinton Selfridge, class of 44-5 is not in your listing. It would be nice to see her included.
Thank you.

I had a chance to fly with Ruby Mensching. First time I saw her she had just landed and was pretty fired up about something that had happened in the process. She stormed into the FBO office cussing up a storm. She was quite a no-nonsense lady. A few months later she was to fly me back after I had delivered a plane for maintenance. I was a little apprehensive to say the least being a low time pilot. As we approached the plane she told me "You fly!" OMG... As it turned out she was the one of the greatest pilots I had the opportunity to fly with. Guess I asked the right questions... she let me land. I had never flown a twin. My biggest regret is I didn't have more time to get to know her better. Mike Young

Back in 1947 Joan Whelan Class 44-2 was my Instructor in an Aeronca 7AC. A couple of Ex-Military [ male } Instructors that were very demanding and kept
yelling at me,perhaps I deserved it, but being 17yrs. old I took it personal and requested another Instructor. I was turned over to Joan and we had a long talk and she understood the problem and in a lady like manner, but firm, instructed me thru and gave me my check ride for my Private License. I am now 85yrs. old and thank you Joan.

My grandfather Leo Purinton was an instructor at Thunderbird Field in 1943 and was briefly married to and gave flying lessons to Dorothea Retread Parameter Scatena, who later went on to be a WASP and fly the B-26.

Anyway of learning more about her or contacting her family.

I recently bought a 1973 Volkswagen Superbeetle. In the trunk I found a folder. In the folder I found a picture of a female flight officer next to a AT-6. It said Margaret "Pinky" Weiss. Upon researching her, I came upon your organization. I had no idea the service and sacrifice many of you made. I to am a veteran. I served two branches of our military. Two months ago, I taught my 11 year old daughter how to drive Pinky's "Sunshine". She bought this car after 25 years of service to the neighborhood my grandfather was raised in. He and his brother also served during Korea. I believe it was because of Pinky, and people like her, that were dedicated to the service of others, that my family was able to enjoy freedom and a better life. Thank you all. And Sunshine will live on as Pinky will live on by the lives that she touched. All of your dedication to service has saved lives and helped to win a war. Thank you all!
